Membrane potentials Flashcards
1
Q
Resting membrane potential
A
The difference in electrical charge between the inside of a cell and the outside of a cell - about -70 to -85 millivolts
2
Q
Depolarization
A
- Na+ moves into cell due to ^permeability
- Membrane potential decreases/moves “forward” from a negative value to 0
- Cell becomes more positively charged
- Polarity is neutralized
3
Q
Threshold potential
A
When the cell has depolarized by 15-20mV as the result of a stimulus, it will continue to depolarize without additional stimulation
-Na+ gates open and it rushes in
