Membrane Cell Flashcards

1
Q

What is the MAIN difference between a membrane cell and a diaphragm cell?

A

The diaphragm is replaced by an ion-selective membrane. This membrane only allows positive ions to pass between compartments, negating the need for a pressure gradient. The result is to increase the purity of the NaOH produced significantly.

Q

What does the ion-selective membrane do? (2)

A
  • Cl- ions cannot travel into the cathode compartment and contaminate the NaOH.
  • OH- ions cannot travel into the anode compartment and be oxidised to form O2.
