Membership of the League Flashcards
Who were the two most powerful nations in the League?
Britain and France
Who were the original permanent members of the Council?
Britain, France, Japan and Italy
Why were Britain and France poorly placed to lead?
- Both had been weakened by WWI
- Neither was the great power it once had been
- Neither had the resources to fill the gap left by the USA
Why did many see America’s absence as such a big deal?
- Only the USA had the resources to make the League work
- Also, trade sanctions would only work if the USA applied them (which it didn’t have to if it wasn’t a member of the League)
What was Britain more focused on than the League?
Looking after its empire and rebuilding trade
What was France more focused on than the League?
France still feared Germany. This meant it would do anything - including bypassing the League - to strengthen its position against Germany

Which two countries left the League in 1933?
