MEM 03 - Coding and evaluation of MSM Flashcards
1
Q
Who discovered the duration of Sensory memory? And when?
A
George sperling (1960) and Walsh and Thompson
2
Q
What was the procedure of Sperling’s experiment?
A
- Participants saw a grid of digits and letters for 50 milliseconds (0.05 seconds).
- They were asked to write down all 12 items or in the partial experiment they would hear a tone immediately after the exposure and be told to write down either the top, bottom or middle row.
3
Q
What were the findings of Sperling’s experiment?
A
- When asked to recall the whole thing, participants on average only recalled 5/12 items (42%).
- In the partial report, participants recalled on average 3/4 items (75%).
4
Q
Who was HM?
A
- HM (Henry molasain) underwent brain surgery to relieve his epilepsy
- However, some of his hippocampus was accidently removed from both sides of his brain
- HM was able to remember previous experiences from his childhood, however he could no longer form new LTM and was unable to recall past events from 11 years ago.
- However, he performed well on immediate tasks/tests showing his STM was still intact.
5
Q
What is the problem with the case study of HM?
A
It has poor population validity, it does not represent the wider population.
6
Q
Who discovered the capacity of Sensory memory?
A
Javitt
7
Q
Who discovered the coding of Sensory memory?
A
Crowder
8
Q
How does clive wearing support the theory of the MSM?
A
- Clive Wearing could still use his STM to remember things for about 20 seconds but then he would
forget everything - he could not form new LTMs - The Multi Store Model can be applied to his case, because it suggests an inability to rehearse information into LTM.
