Melody
An arrangement of pitches in a logical order
Dissonance
When the melody and the harmony lines do not agree, or when a pitch from the melody is not contained within the harmony
Consonance
Pitches that belong in the harmony
Motif
A repeated pattern throughout a melody
Sequence
A repeated pattern that is played successively on higher or lower pitches
Phrase
A musical thought that cannot stand on its own
Period
A completed, structurally sound musical idea
Antecedent phrase
The first phrase within a period
Consequent phrase
The second phrase within a period
Parallel period
A period in which the antecedent and consequent phrases are the same or very similar to one another
Contrasting period
A period in which the antecedent and consequent phrases are different
