Meiosis vocab Flashcards
Crossing-over
Process in Meiosis 1 in which segments of non-sister chromatids exchange segments of DNA
-in prophase 1
Independent assortment
During Meiosis 1 the homologous pairs will separate into daughter cells.
- where each homologous ends up is totally random
- increase in genetic variation
Diploid
HAVING a full set of chromosomes
2n- 2 sets of chromosomes
n- the number of chromosome
2- # of chromosomes x that made
Gametes
Specialized cells for reproduction (sex cells); all other cells are body cells (somatic cells)
Haploid
1/2 the set of DNA
- 1n
Meiosis
The process of producing gametes.
- 2 phases of Meiosis: Meiosis 1 and Meiosis 2
Sexual reproduction
Reproduction that involves the mixing of 2sets of DNA from 2 parents
- offspring are different from that of parents
- produces genetic diversity
- process of bringing nonidentical gametes together
Asexual reproduction
Producing offspring from a single parent; the offspring has the same DNA as that of the parent-clone/looks identical
Mitosis
Process of dividing a nucleons into 2 so that both have the correct amount of DNA
Mating
Members of the opposite gender come together at certain times of the year to reproduce/mate; during the most favourable time of the year to ensure the best possibility for survival of the offspring. (Food temperature, weather, etc.)
Fertilization
Gametes come together to form a zygote which becomes an embryos
-only 1 sperm to combine with each egg/ovum: ensures the correct amount of chromosomes
Conditions for cell divisions
- nutrients
- temperature
- moisture
