meiosis + mitosis Flashcards
What is meiosis?
cell division that produces sex cells
What kind of cells does meiosis produce?
egg + sperm cells (gametes)
Diploid meaning:
presence of two complete sets of chromosome in an organisms cells.
Haploid meaning:
single set if chromosomes in an organisms cells.
somatic cells meaning:
all human body cells except sex cells
gametes meaning:
sex cells, (egg and sperm)
IN MEIOSIS what happens in interphase?
DNA is replicated
IN MEIOSIS what happens in prophase 1
chromosomes cross over each other to prepare to exchange genetic material, nucleus disappears.
IN MEIOSIS what happens in metaphase 1?
chromosome pairs line up in middle of cells, microtubules attach to chromosome
IN MEIOSIS what happens in anaphase 1?
whole chromosome is separated from chromosome pair (split into chromatids)
IN MEIOSIS what happens in telophase 1?
chromosomes are on each side of cell and cell starts to split into two.
IN MEIOSIS what happens in Prophase 2?
chromosomes condense
IN MEIOSIS what happens in metaphase 2?
chromosome line up in middle of cell with chromatids attached.
IN MEIOSIS what happens in anaphase 2?
chromatids separate by microtubules to opposite sides
IN MEIOSIS what happens in telophase 2?
nuclear membrane forms and chromosome uncoil.
