Meiosis Flashcards
what are some things that happen during meiosis
- chromosome number in the nucleus is halved
- the daughter cells formed have only one set of chromosomes and are not identical to each other or the mother cell
what happens in meiosis i
the chromosome number is halved and genetic material is exchanged
what happens in meiosis ii
the daughter cells, chromosomes and chromatids separate from each other
prophase i
homologous chromosomes arrange themselves into pairs and form bivalents
metaphase i
bivalents arrange themselves on the equator
the chromosomes lie on a double row on either side of the equator
anaphase i
homologous chromosomes are separated
each chromosome moves to opposite sides of the equator
telophase i
chromosomes group themselves at the poles
spindle fibre disappears
what is the purpose of meiosis
to ensure genetic variation
what is genetic variation and how it is accomplished
the differences that occur as a result of different gene combinations
- crossing over and the exchange of genetic material during prophase i
- random arrangement of chromosomes on the equator during metaphase i
define aneuploidy
extra chromosomes or missing chromosomes in a cell
non-disjunction is also known as
chromosome mutations / abberations / abnormal meiosis
