Meds Flashcards
2 types of bisphosphanates
Nitrogen containing
Non-nitrogen containing
Nitrogen containing bisphosphanates
Alendronate
Risedronate
Pamidronate
Zolendronate(zoledronic acid)
“PRAZ they have nitrogen”
Contraindications to bisphosphanates
Severe renal disease
Following lumbar fusion
Mech of action for nitrogen containing bisphosphanates
Inhibit farnesyl pyrophosphatase synthase enzyme which inhibits GTPase formation
Mech of action for non-nitrogen containing bisphosphanates
Induce osteoclasts to undergo premature death and apoptosis by forming a toxic ATP analogue
PCN mech of action
Bactericidal: block cross linking via competitive inhibition of transpeptidase enzyme
Cephalosporin mech of action
Bactericidal: inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis via competitive inhibition of transpeptidase enzyme
Vancomycin mech of action
Bactericidal: disrupts peptioglycan cross linking disrupting cell wall
Beta-lactamase mech of action
Bactericidal: block cross linking
Abx which disrupt protein synthesis by binding 30s subunit
Aminoglycosides: bactericidal
Tetracyclines:bacteriostatic
Abx which disrupt protein synthesis by binding 50s subunit
Macrolides
Chloramphenicol
Linezolid
Abx which inhibit DNA synthesis by inhibiting DNA gyrase
Fluoroquinolones
Rifampin mech of action
Inhibits rna transcription by inhibiting rna polymerase
Isoniazid mech of action
Mycolic acid synthesis inhibitor
Bactrim mechanism of action
Folic acid synthesis inhibitor
