Meds for diverticular disease
A
- Metronidazole **
#1 go to antibiotic - Ciprofloxacin**
DO NOT take with Dairy
BBW for tendonitis - Trimethoprim
WITH FOOD - Rifaximin **
Poorly absorbed, take with fiber supplement
ACUTE IV MEDS - Cefoxitin
NO ALCOHOL - Piperacillin-tazobactam
Make sure they are not allergic to penicillin

Meds for GERD/ PUD/Gastritis/ Hiatal Hernia
A
No probiotics for hernia
Antacids
- Take with food or after food. Can be used as a prevention or stop burning sensation
- Chronic use can increase C Diff infection due to loss of protective flora
- Calcium carbonate
- Too much can result in kidney stones
- Aluminum magnesium
- Magnesium hydroxide
- Too much can cause diarrhea
H2 Receptor antagonists ends in “-tidines”
- Take with the first meal of the day.
- Chronic use can increase C Diff infection due to loss of protective flora
- monitor prolonged QT-interval in pt with kidney injury
Famotidine
- Most commonly prescribed, can take q6-8 hrs
- Ranitidine
- Cimetidine
Prokinetic agents
- Accelerate gastric emptying
- Metoclopramide: pay attention to pt who have issues with psych meds or Parkinson’s dz because tardive dyskinesia -> move to proton inhibitors instead
- Take 30 mins before meals and at bedtime
- Not for hernia
