Q

What bird is this?

A

Tropical Kingbird

Large, ubiquitous yellow-bellied flycatcher. A classic “telephone wire” bird along roadsides and in towns. In particular, they like golf courses and parks. Most abundant in lowlands and foothills, but ventures up to over 3,000m in some parts of range.

Listen for sharp, high-pitched twitters. Larger and longer-billed than Western and Cassin’s Kingbird; also note paler brownish tail. Also very similar to White-throated (longer, forked tail) and Snowy-throated (dark mask) Kingbirds in some parts of South America.

Q

What bird is this?

A

Blue-Gray Tanager

Their plumage is shades of blue, from nearly gray to very bright. They have dark eyes, dark gray legs, and a short, thick bill. Populations east of the Andes have white wing bars.

Look for this vibrant blue bird in Colombia in agricultural areas and urban parks. They adapt well to human presence and will feed on cultivated fruit like papayas. Blue-gray Tanagers travel in pairs or small flocks and are noisy and restless.
