Who was Galen?
Galen was an ancient Roman physician, surgeon and philosopher who’s ideas were studied by most people in the medieval times
Who was Hippocrates?
He was a Greek physician and philosopher created the 4 humours theory which was adapted on by Galen
What was the main belief about causes of disease?
A punishment from God
What were the 4 humours?
Blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile
Who did the rich get treated by?
Physicians who would study for 7 years at uni reading mostly books with no practical experience. They would study urine and star charts.
What was a barber surgeon?
He was a barber who would often perform minor surgeries like removing a toe. Very unhygienic and had to have a steady hand.
What were apothecaries?
They would sell herbal remedies like theriaca to treat diseases.
When did the Black Death start and end?
1348-1351
How did the Black Death come to England?
Merchant ships
What were the 3 main types of the Black Death?
Bubonic
Pneumonic
Septacemic
What was done to try and treat it?
Flagellation and praying
How did this affect Europe?
Killed over 30% of Europe and took over 100 years for Europe to recover.
