who were barbers?
barbers were found more commonly than doctors in towns and cities and were cheaper. they often did minor operations such as bloodletting and tooth extraction. they were also known for trepanning, amputation and cauterisation.
who were quack doctors?
very common self taught doctor who gave out cures and treatments that were often fake and based on superstition.
where were most surgerys held?
on the battlefield where they had to use opium and mandrake root as anaesthetic

large water sources. often they used poisinous lead pipes to transport the water.

what was the black death?
a combination or the Bubonic plague and Pnuemonic plague which combined in 1348 to 1350. it was carried by fleas on rats from Europe although it was blamed on bad miasma and Jews.
why did the black death spread so quickly?
people lived close together so they were exposed to it. over one third of Europe’s population died
who were most affected and how did this affect everyone?
peasants were most likely to catch the black death and die meaning there were food shortages and they demanded more money leading to changes in the church and local council
who was galen?
Built on the work of Hippocrates. Dissected
animals to improve understanding of the Human
body. His ideas were taught by the Church.
who was hippocrates?
Ancient Greek Physician who is thought to have
developed the theory of the Four Humours.
(This idea was used for over 1000 years)
who was Al-Razi?
Islamic doctor. Worked out the difference between
measles and smallpox. Tried to improve Galen’s work. also known as Rhazes
who was Ibn Sina?
Wrote an encyclopaedia of medicine called Canon of
Medicine that was used as the standard medical
textbook for medical students until the 17th Century. also know as Avicenna.
