When did Feudalism flourish?
9th-15th Century
Who was at the top of the hierarchy?
The King
What did Lords/Nobles do for the King?
They supplied the King with horses and soldiers for their army
What did Knights do for Nobles/Lords?
They fought in the King’s army in exchange for land
What did peasants do?
Farmed on the Knight’s land in return for shelter, food and protection.
What were the three ordeals?
Ordeal by fire, by water and by combat.
When was trial by jury introduced by the Pope?
1215
What was a gibbet?
A structure outside a town where the guilty’s body were hung as a warning sign.
What was ordeal by fire?
You held a hot iron bar and walked three paces with it and then bandaged your hand up and if after three days it was healed you were deemed innocent.
What was ordeal by water?
Your hands and legs were tied and you were thrown into water, and if you floated you were guilty.
What was a battlement?
The top part of castle with spaces in between bricks to shoot arrows from.
What was a catapult used for?
To launch rocks simply over castle walls
What was ordeal by combat?
When the accused and the accuser fought and whoever won was right.
What was a keep?
The safest part of the castle and a last resort during an attack.
