What is a doom painting?
A doom painting is a painting that is used to strike fear into those so that they will go to church.
What could the church host?
Baptisms, funerals and marriages as well as regular services.
For what reasons could you be punished by the church?
You could get punished for: Gambling with dice Not going to church Being drunk Swearing Shaving beards on a Sunday Not knowing the Lord's prayer
How could you minimise time in time in purgatory?
By: Trusting in the power of your priest Going on a pilgrimage Trusting in nuns, friars and monks to pray for you Buy a special pardon Build a chantry chapel
Who is the pope?
The leader of the catholic church in Rome and God’s representative on Earth.
Who is the pope said to be?
God’s representative on Earth.
What is a nun?
A female monk. They stay in the monastery and attend
mass prayers as well as helping poor, sick and elderly
What is a friar?
A friar has devoted their life to god outside a monastery. They travelled, begged for food and helped those in need.
What is a bishop?
Bishops were wealthy and often came from nobel families. They were states men and diplomats and were given land under the feudal system. They reside over a diocese of a large area of churches.
What is a parish priest?
Parish priests came from humbler backgrounds. Recieved money from tithe tax and gave spiritual comfort and held local meetings.
What is a monk?
Monks lived in a monastery. They shaved their heads so they had a ring of hair representing Jesus’ crown of thorns, had no possessions and helped those in need.
What is purgatory?
The waiting room between heaven and hell.
