The Crown, Abbots Bishops Barons, Knights, Commoners
What was the order of the Medieval Church Hierarchy?
The Pope, Archbishops, Bishops, Priests, Parishioners
What is Feudalism?
The order in which people were ranked (based on their importance) in the medieval age. Once you were born in class you were expected to stay there your entire life
What did the king contribute and gain from the system
Contributed: Gave out land, created armies, created alliances with nearby kingdoms
Got: Food from commoners, resources, power over people (status)
What did lord/barons contribute and gain from the system
Contributed: Gave out land to commoners
Got: High amounts of resources, food and status
What did the knights contribute and gain from the system
Contributed: Loyalty to the king, fought in wars/served in army
Got: Status, titles, food, roof over there heads
What did the peasants/serfs contribute and gain from the system
Contributed: Gave resources to the lord/baron
Got: Land to farm
When did people use the term “lord”
Anyone lower than a duke in British nobility
What was the Black Death
A deadly plague that wiped out 1/3 to 1/2 of Europe’s population, passed on by rats that were infected by fleas
How did the Black Death begin to change feudal society?
With little people to farm resources, there was not enough of the commoners class to function properly. Plus, living serfs could demand better working conditions since there help was needed
What was the Peasant Revolts?
During the 100 years war, the government needed money to fund the war, so they started charging higher taxes and rent which led to the peasants revolting against the government in both England and France
How did the Peasant Revolts begin to change feudal society?
Commoners boycotted farming/work for the government which eventually led to the demolition of all levels
What were some key points about Medieval Town Life?
Most towns were built around a castle
Held opportunities and freedom
People had extra money to spend on luxuries
What is a Guild?
Controlled the production of goods and trade
Craft guild- specialised in a certain trade, with 3 levels being masters, journeymen and apprentices
Merchant guilds- controlled the trade, quality, quantity and price of goods
How did the increase in technology and wealth begin to change medieval society
a new social structure emerged and instead of focusing on land, people more so focused on clothes and jewellery
