Hippocrates was a greek doctor.
What time frame was Medieval?
400 AD up to 1450 AD
What is the theory of the 4 humours?
Belief that the body was made up of 4 different elements.
What are each of the 4 humours?
Blood, Phlegm, Yellow and Black Bile.
Who was Galen?
Galen was a Roman doctor.
What did Galen do?
Galen dissected pigs and discovered that blood circulated around the body
What did the church think about Galen?
Only he was right and no one must question him.
What did the church say about dissections on humans?
They were illegal and inhumane.
How were the four humours treated?
Bloodletting, Purging, Herbs, Exercise…
What was the theory of opposites?
Each of the four humours had an opposite element.
How did Islam help progress development of medicine?
Islamic doctors began to challenge Galen.
How did Islam’s medicine knowledge get to Europe?
Through European doctors coming home from crusades.
