he built on the idea of Hippocrates, believed in keeping clean and he knew that dirty places=disease, but he did not know what the link was.

people were still believing in Galen’s theory’s and people were reluctant to change.

the people still believed in the 4 humours, astrology (planets out of line.) Despite bacteria was seen through microscopes people did not think that bacteria was the reason for causing illness.
