The devil was often blamed for causing diseases as people were very religious.
What does the theory of four humours mean?
The Theory of the Four Humours said the body was made up of:
- Blood
- Phlegm
- Black bile
- Choler (Yellow Bile)
When these are unbalanced you become unwell
What is Miasma? What did people believe it did?
Miasma is bad air filled with harmful fumes that was believed to spread diseases.
What did Galen do?
He was a physician (doctor) and his medical texts were used to teach students in the first European medical school in Salerno

Who promoted Galen’s work and why?
Galen’s work was widely promoted by the Church because it fitted with their teachings.
What happened near the end of the middle ages and what benefit did this have?
The printing press was invented near the end of the Middle Ages
The benefit of this was that it made it easier to share medical texts
