What drug class is Epinephrine?
Adrenergic Agonist
What is Epinephrine given for?
Anaphylaxis, shock, cardiac resuscitation
How is Epinephrine administered?
IM and SubQ
What does Epinephrine do?
Relaxes bronchial smooth muscles, allows for airways to open up
What are some adverse effects of Epinephrine?
Drowsiness, palpitations, HTN, tachycardia, nausea, hyperglycemia, pulmonary edema, arrhythmias, urticaria
Epinephrine drug-drug interactions?
Alpha blockers, antihistamines, Beta blockers, MAOs
Labs effected by Epinephrine?
Increase in BUN, glucose
Decrease K+
Contraindications of Epinephrine
In life threatening situations- NONE
Pts in shock- other than anaphylactic shock
Pts with arrhythmias
Older pts
Nursing considerations for Epinephrine
If BP increases quickly- administer rapid vasodilators
Monitor pts response to the drug
Monitor lab values
What are the treatments for Anaphylaxis?
Epinephrine, albuterol, diphenhydramine, Iv fluids, vasopressors, volume expanders
What drug class is Diphenhydramine?
Antihistamine
