What do you do if they’re already on valproate / carbamazepine?
What to look out for / tell the patient to stop immediately

Start 300mg BD and increase by 200mg daily every 3 or 4 days.

Anti-craving drugs in alcohol dependence include
Naltrexone
Acamprosate
How do they work, what are their doses?
Naltrexone - opioid receptor antagonist = 25mg test dose then 50mg daily
Acamprosate - GABA analogue = 666mg TID
Side effects common to both = nausea, vomiting, headache
Can’t use naltrexone in opiate users e.g. on endone
Can’t use acamprosate in severe hepatic / renal impairment
