Define Circulatory Overload
An IV complication: excessive amounts of IV fluids are administered to quickly, Caused by a failure to monitor an IV infusion or to identify at risk patients.
Signs and symptoms of circulatory overload
edema, JVD, hypertension and can lead to pulmonary edema (crackles in lung fields)
Tx of circulatory overload
Stop IV, raise the heead of the bed, if signs of pulmonary edema give o2
Define Infiltration
S&S and Tx
IV fluids outside of the vasculature.
Signs and symptoms: swelling around IV site, skin will feel cool, firm and pale.
TX. stop IV, apply heat, start new IV proximal or in the other arm
what is Thrombophlebitis
Thrombophlebitis (throm-boe-fluh-BY-tis) is an inflammatory process that causes a blood clot to form and block one or more veins, usually in your legs. The affected vein might be near the surface of your skin (superficial thrombophlebitis) or deep within a muscle (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT).
Treat with warmth and elevate IV site (stop IV)
IV complication: Air Embolism
=air infused into veins.
S&S: Anxiety, Hypoxia, Respiratory distress, hypotension.
Tx, stop IV, place pt. on left side in trendelenberg position. GiveO2
