The federal controlled substance act (CSA)
Places all substances which were in some manner regulated under existing federal law into one of the 5 schedules
Schedule 1
includes substances that have a high potential for abuse and no approved medical use. Heroin, mescaline, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). Schedule 1 does still include cannabis
Schedule 2
includes substances that have a high potential for abuse, are considered dangerous, and can lead to psychological and physical dependence. Morphine, methadone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, hydrocodone, fentanyl, and methamphetamine. Providers must give patients a handwritten prescription with no refills.
Schedule 3
includes substances that have a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence. Ketamine, anabolic steroids, and testosterone. Providers must give patients a handwritten prescription. They may refill them 5x in 6mos.
Schedule 4
includes substances that have a low potential for abuse and dependence. diazepam, zolpidem, eszopiclone, alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide and clonazepam. Providers must sign prescriptions for these substances, and patients may refill them 5x in 6mos. Staff may authorize refills over phone.
