Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
A virus that attacks the immune system. Transmitted from sexual intercourse, vertical transmission, and infected blood.
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
Chronic (long term) attacks the immune system.
Maternal-to-child transmission (MTCT)
Active viruses in the mother and is transmitted to child from mother to child. (Vertical Transmission)
Volunteer counseling and testing (VCT)
Testing before and after HIV to check status.
Antiretroviral drug (ARV)
HIV medicine drug.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
Medicine taken to prevent HIV
Stigma
A set of negative beliefs of a group of people have about something.
Disability Adjusted Life Year (DALY)
Loss of the equivalent of one year of full health.
Tuberculosis (TB)
Bacterial disease that attacks the lungs. (Tends to mutate) *antibiotic resistant
Directly observed treatment short course (DOTS)
Directly watch patients swallow pills for TB (take the medicine everyday)
Antibiotic resistance
Not taking the medicine- fully/everyday
Malaria
Disease from protozoa transmitted from infected mosquitos.
Artemisinin combination therapy (ACT)
Using 1 or more drugs to kill of parasites/protozoa. *specifically made for Malaria
Vector
A particle that carries nucleic acid into a cell.
Neglected tropical disease (NTD)
Diseases that are prevalence in Tropical Areas/impoverished areas.
