frontal/lateral plane
One side of the body to the other creates the front and back of the body
sagittal plane
Passes from the front through the back of the body, creating a left and right side
anterior
A structure is in front of another structure
posterior
A structure is behind another structure
Medial
A structure is closer to the midline of the body than another structure
lateral
A structure is farther to the midline of the body than another structure
proximal
closer to the trunk
distal
farther from the trunk
superior
something higher than another structure
inferior
something lower than another structure
dorsal
the top side of a structure
ventral
downside or bottom aspect of a structure
superficial
situated near the surface
deep
structure being closer to the core of the body than another structure
prone
lying face down
supine
lying face up (lying on spine, supine=spine)
epidermis
outermost layers of the skin
dermis
layer of skin between the epidermis
axial skeleton
includes the bones of the spine, thorax, & skull
epiphysis
The area at the end of a long bone where growth is (growth plate)
cartilage
a thin layer of cushioning at the ends of the bones
connective tissue
supports, protects, & gives structure to other tissues & organs in the body
tendons
attach muscle to bone
