medical terms Flashcards
relating to the heart and blood vessels
Cardiovascular
Any of tubular passageways in cardiovascular system through which blood travels
Blood vessel
the main blood vessel that supplies oxygen-rich blood to the heart.
coronary artery
Either of the two upper chambers of heart
Atrium
Either of the two lower chambers of heart
Ventricle
Structure that prevent fluid from flowing backward or forward
Valve
A tiny artery connecting to a capillary
Arteriole
A thick-walled blood vessel (carries oxygenated blood away from heart).
Artery
Relaxation phase of a heartbeat (the heart is relaxed)
Diastole
Contraction phase of the heartbeat (the heart is contracted)
Systole
Membranous lining of chambers and valves of heart; the innermost layer of heart tissue.
Endocardium
Lining of the arteries that secretes substances into the blood.
Endothelium
Outermost layer of heart tissue
Epicardium
Muscular layer of heart tissue between epicardium and endocardium.
Myocardium
Protective covering of heart
Pericardium
Rhythmic expansion and contraction of a blood vessel
Pulse
Region of right atrium containing specialized tissue that sends electrical
impulses and excite heart for contraction
Sinoatrial (SA) node
Sinus rhythm
Normal heart rhythm.
Blood vessel that carries deoxygenated
blood toward heart
Vein
Fluid circulated throughout arteries, veins, capillaries and heart.
Blood
Albumin
Simple protein found in plasma.
Erythrocyte
Mature red blood cell
Globulin
family of proteins in blood plasma
Leukocyte
Mature white blood cell.
Protein in red blood cells essential to the transport of oxygen
Hemoglobin
Blood pigment containing iron in hemoglobin
Heme
Hematocytoblast
Most immature blood cell
Large cells in red bone marrow that form platelets
Megakaryocyte
Neutrophil, monocyte, lymphocyte
Type of leukocytes
Portion of un-clotted blood
Plasma
The liquid left after blood has clotted
Serum
Enzyme that helps in clot formation
Thrombin
Measure of the percentage of red blood cells in a blood sample
Hematocrit
Injection of donor blood into a person needing blood
Transfusion
Thyroid cartilage (supportive structure of the larynx)
Adam’s apple
Air sac at the end of each bronchiole
Alveolus (pleural: Alveoli)
One of the two airways from the trachea to the Lungs.
Bronchus (pleural: Bronchi)
Fine subdivision of the bronchi made of smooth muscle and elastic fibers
Bronchiole
Hair-like extensions of a cell’s surface (provide protection by sweeping foreign particles away).
Cilia (plural of cilium)
Membranous muscle between abdominal and thoracic cavities.
Diaphragm
Breathing out
Exhalation, expiration
Breathing in
Inspiration, inhalation
One of two organs of respiration responsible for oxygenation of blood.
Lung
Double layer of membrane making up the outside of lungs.
Pleura
