Sagittal Plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into right and left halves. A mid-sagittal plane passes through the midline of the body
Frontal (Coronal) Plane
A vertical plane at a right angle to the sagittal plane, that divides the body into anterior & posterior portions
Transverse Plane
Horizontal
A plane that’s at right angles to the frontal & sagittal planes. This transverse plane is perpendicular to the long axis of the body
Anatomic Position
The position of the body when the subject is standing erect facing the observer, the upper extremities at the side & the palms turned forward
Supine Position
Position in which the body is lying face upward
Prone Position
Position in which the body is lying face downward
Lateral Decubitus Position
Recumbent
The position of the body when the subject is lying on their side. The lateral position is named by the side that’s situated against the table or radiographic table. For a left lateral decubitus position the patient’s left side is placed against the table or radiographic table.
