Antigen
A substance that stimulates the production of an antibody when introduced into the body. Antigens include toxins, bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances.
Diaphragm
A broad, dome-shaped muscle used for breathing. It separates the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities
Biopsy
Process of viewing living tissue that has been removed for the purpose of diagnosis and/or treatment
Homeostasis
The internal environment of the body that is compatible with life. A steady state that is created by the body systems working together to provide a consistent and unvarying internal environment.
Mitosis
A cell division process by which two daughter cells are formed from one parent cell; each daughter has a complete copy of parent’s chromosomes.
Oncologist
A specially trained doctor who diagnoses and treats cancer.
Pathogen
A disease-causing organism.
Antibodies
A protein substance produced in the blood or tissues in response to a specific antigen, which destroy or weaken the antigen; part of the immune system
Combining Forms
The “Subjects” of most terms. They consist of the word root with its respective combining vowel.
Autoimmune
An immune response against a person’s own tissues, cells, or cell parts, as in autoimmune disease , leading to the deterioration of tissue.
Malaise
A condition of general bodily weakness or discomfort, often marking the onset of a disease.
Remission
The partial or complete disappearance of the clinical and subjective characteristics of a chronic or malignant disease
Sterile
Free of all microorganisms, pathogenic, and nonpathogenic.
Fatigue
Extreme tiredness
Mold
Growth of tiny fungi forming on a substance. Often looks downy or furry and is associated with dampness or decay.
