Prone
lying with the front or face downward
Supine
lying on the back; having the face upward
Superior
toward the head or upper part of the body, or above. EX: the heart is superior to the stomach
Transverse Plane
divides the body or any of its parts into Above and Below (Superior and Inferior)
Ventral (Anterior)
toward or at the front of the body, or in front of. EX: the ventral surface of the body include the chest
Median (Midsagittal) Plane
divides the body or any of its parts into Right and Left sides
Frontal Plane
divides the body or any of its part into Front and Back (Anterior and Posterior)
Inferior
away from the head or towards the lower part of the body, or below. EX: the foot is inferior to the knee
Dorsal (Posterior)
toward or at the back of the body, or behind. EX: one of the dorsal surfaces of the body are the back
Medial
toward or at the midline of the body, or on the inner side of
Lateral
away from the midline of the body, or on the outer side of
Intermediate
between a more medial and more lateral structure
Proximal
closer to the origin of the body part
Distal
farther from the origin of the body part
Superficial (External)
toward or at the body surface
Deep (Internal)
away from the body surface or more internal
