What is a combining vowel?
Is often inserted between word roots to make the word easier to pronounce.
Ex: speed/o/meter
What is a combining form?
In the word speed/o/meter, speed/o is a combining form that is simply the word root “speed” plus the vowel o.

Is attached to the end of a word or word root to modify its meaning.
When do you use a combining vowel?
Is used before suffixes that begin with a consonant and before another word root. In other words, drop the combinning vowel if the suffix also begins with a vowel (a,e,i,o, or u).
Joining combining forms?
The combining vowel is usually retained between two combining forms. Ex: gastr/o+enterology= gastroenterology.
Joining combining forms and suffixes?
The combining vowel is usually retained when a combining form is joined with a suffix that begins with a consonant. Ex: enter/o+logy=enterology.
Joining other word parts and prefixes?
Most prefixes require no change when they are oined with other words parts. Ex: peri+appendicitis=periappendicitis.
What are eponyms?
Are names for diseases, organs, procedures, or body functions that are derived from the name of a person. Ex: Parkinson disease and Alzheimers. Eponyms are usually capitalized.
What are abbreviations?
Are shortened forms of written words or phrases that are used in place of the whole. Ex: MD= “doctor of medicine”
What are acronyms?
Are pronounceable names made up of a series of letters or parts of words. Ex: CABG=coronary artery bypass graft.
What is pharmacology?
Is the study of the preparation, properties, uses, and action drugs.
