Anterior
Front of body, forward-facing
Posterior
Back of body, rear-facing
Medial
Towards the ‘middle,’
toward the center
Proximal
Oriented closer to point of reference
Distal
Oriented away from point of reference
Echymosis
Bluish-Purple discoloration; Contusion. ‘Bruise.’
Caudal
At, or near the tail or posterior, or to ‘move in that direction.’
Cephalad
Oriented towards the head, or to ‘move in the direction of the head.’
Deformity
Deformity, or malformation; used to describe an injury.. Used to describe orthopedic (bone) injuries, or Fractures.
Laceration
A ‘wound’ typically produced by tearing or cutting; often by a sharp object, e.g., a knife. Type of Soft Tissue Injury.
Abrasion
A wound, often described, “Scaping, Erosion, Scratch, etc). Type of Soft Tissue Injury.
Edema
Swelling, often associated with an injury. Fluid collection, or ‘build up.’
P.M.I.
Point of Maximal Impulse. Location is the 5th ICS (intercostal space); point where the heart is loudest.
