Medical Terminology Flashcards
define/understand terms
abnormal state with an increase of H+ concentration in the blood and the pH is < 7.35
Acidosis
abnormal state with a decrease of H+ concentration in the blood and the pH is >7.35
Alkalosis
small air sacs within the lungs upon whose membrane, gas exchange takes place.
Alveoli
lack of oxygen
Anoxia
absence of ventilation
Apnea
a hypersensitivity disorder with reversible airway obstruction from bronchospasm, mucosal edema, and or secretions of the viscous mucus.
Asthma
to look at and form a educated opinion
Assessment
absence of a heartbeat, but electrical activity persists
Asystole
to listen to body sounds, within the body.
Auscultation
a heart rate <60 bpm
Bradycardia
division of the trachea into two tubes; each tube is a bronchi
Bronchi
divisions of the bronchi containing alveoli
Bronchioles
smallest blood vessels and is the site in which gas exchange takes place
Capillaries
a disease process whose main Etiology is cigarette smoking which causes destruction of alveolar tissue. Also known as COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
a state whereby the pumping ability of the heart is impaired and results in a fluid retention in the tissues (edema) and lungs. Also known as C.H.F
Congestive Heart Failure
dry cracking sensation as in subcutaneous emphysema or crackles
Crepitus
blue discolorations of the skin or mucous membrane due to hypoxemia (lack of oxygen)
Cyanosis
muscle inferior to the lungs upon whose contraction causes inspiration
Diaphragm
to cause or loose volume (Lasix)
Diuretic
subjective feeling of short of breath
Dyspnea
retention of fluid in the tissue
Edema
blockage of a vessel or airway
Embolus
normal breathing
Eupnea
flap of tissue covering trachea when swallowing and esophagus when breathing.
Epiglottis
blood in the pleural space
Hemothorax
low oxygen in the blood, PaO2<80mmHg
Hypoxia
muscles between ribs and are considered accessory muscle of ventilation
Intercostal Muscles
voice box
Larynx
communication between the lung and the pleural space or atmosphere
Pneumothorax
excessive fluid (plasma) that enters the interstitial tissue and alveoli
Pulmonary Edema
an acute, severe, and prolonged asthma attack
Status Asthmaticus
high pitched on inspiration due to tissue swelling
Stridor
blood clot
Thrombus
lower airway
Trachea
popping/crackling sound of air moving through fluid (pulmonary edema)
Rales
coarse/rough sound of air moving through secretions
Rhonchi
