Discovered penicillin - led to the introduction of antibiotics - between ww1 and ww2.
Sir William Beveridge
Wrote the Beveridge Report in 1942 - all of the nation should be freed from the 5 giants - led to NHS free healthcare opening in 1948.
Edwin Chadwick
Produced a gov. commisioned report in 1842 - showed link between squalor and lower life expectancy
Led to Public Health Act of 1848.
John Snow
In 1854, discovered that cholera was caused by dirty water, not miasma (many disagreed)
Led the Broad Street Investigation.
Sir Humphrey Davis
In 1799, discovered Nitrous oxide - first pain relief (Industrial revolution onwards)
made the patient laugh uncontrollably.
John Collins
First used Ether - around 1840 - made the patient cough uncontrollably, though no pain felt.
James Simpson
Accidentally discovered Chloroform 1847 - his wife came home to he and his friend unconcious.
Helped pain during childbirth.
Hannah Greener, 15, died during toenail surgery due to an overdose.
Joseph Lister
Advocated the use of antiseptics to tackle infection caused by microbes - HYGIENE AND DISEASE. 1867
Louis Pasteur
1860 came up with ‘Germ Theory’ , led to pasteurisation (heat treating milk)
Robert Koch
1884 - Proved Pasteur’s germ theory, with staining anthrax germs and injecting into mice.
Linked germs to disease in humans.

c400BC - came up with the four humours

c170AD - first ideas of anatomy
Used disection - Church did not like this, though he believed in 1 god, so they liked him himself.
