Medical Errors In Blood Collection Flashcards
Another word for fainting
Syncope
When blood has accumulated in the tissue surrounding the vein
Hematoma
Inflammation of a vein as a result of repeated venipuncture on that vein
Phlebitis
Tiny non-raised red spots that appear on the skin from rupturing of the capillaries due to the tourniquet being left on too long or too tight
Petechiae
A blood clot usually a consequence of insufficient pressure applied after the withdrawal of the needle
Thrombus
Inflammation of a vein with formation of a clot
Thrombophlebitis
A systemic infection associated with the presence of pathogenic organism introduced during a venipuncture
Septicemia
This occurs when the needle is inserted too deeply into the tissue. This is determined by the fact that the blood will “pulse” into the tube instead of flowing naturally
Inadvertent arterial puncture
The accumulation of fluid in the tissues
Edema
A permanent surgical connection between an artery and a vein. Must never be used for venipuncture
Fistula
Rupturing of red blood cells and release of it’s contents
Hemolysis
