Medical Asepsis Flashcards
Infection Control
Provides measures that reduce or eliminate sources and transmission of infection and protects patients and health care workers
Health Care Associated Infections (HAIs)
infections not present before hospital visit but acquired while at the hospital
Chain of Infection
Infection will occur if chain is not broken, to break the chain, one must wash hands to prevent infection. Entry occurs through open membranes (eyes, mouth, nose etc)
Chain of infection order
transmission-portal of entry-host susceptibility-infectious agent-reservoir-portal of exit-transmission
Asepsis
The absence of pathogenic (disease-producing) microorgnisms
Medical Asepsis
Asepsis, clean technique. ex: sanitize, put on gloves, then change dressing
Surgical Asepsis
Sterile technique. ex: tools are put in an autoclave to destroy organisms before use again
Infection Prevention
Hand hygiene with appropriate alcohol based hand sanitizer or hand soap will help prevent infections
Standard/Contact Precautions
To prevent and control infection and its spread. Standard precautions apply to bodily fluids, nonintact skin, and mucous membranes.
Droplet Precautions
Diseases that are transmitted by large droplets expelled into the air that can travel 3ft. Require the wearing of a surgical mask and regular P.P.E
Airborne Precautions
Diseases that are transmitted by smaller droplets which remain in the air for longer periods of time. This requires a special filtered room and an N65 respiratory mask
Personal protective equipment
specialized clothing for protection against infectious materials (includes: gowns, masks, gloves, goggles, )
