What is continuity editing? (3 main aspects)
Most common system of cutting in mainstream films. Establishes illusion of continuous action, and keeps the audiences’ attention on the story.
What is non-continuity editing? (2 main aspects)
An editing style which draws the audience’s attention to the construction of the film, revealing that the film is not ‘natural’.
What is a shot-reverse-shot? (2 main aspects)
When one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), then the other character is shown looking “back” at the first character.
What is cross cutting? (2 main aspects)
An editing technique most commonly used to establish action occurring at the same time in two different locations. Can be used to build suspense.
What is fast-paced editing? (2 main aspects)
When lots of shots are edited together quickly. Builds tension and shows effect of action taking place quickly.
What is dissolve? (1 main aspect)
The gradual transition from one image to another.
What is cut? (2 main aspects)
When one shot abruptly transitions to another, usually to maintain continuity editing.
What is wipe? (3 main aspects)
A transition from one image to another: an image is replaced by another with a distinct edge that forms a shape. E.g a simple edge, turning of a page. expanding circle. Makes audience more ‘aware’ they are watching a film/
What is fade? (2 main aspects)
A transition generally used at the end of a scene to indicate the audience an end of action. Generally fading to black.
What is a jump cut? (3 main aspects)
When two shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that only vary slightly, causing the subject to appear to ‘jump’ in an abrupt way, drawing audience’s attention to the editing.
What is CGI? (2 main aspects)
Computer generated imagery (any still or moving image created using software)
What is slow motion? (1 main aspect)
A post-production effect in which time seems to slow down
