media literacy
understanding of communication process, which enables a person to become more engaged and informed as a citizen and more discerning as a consumer of mass media
mass media
cultural industries- channels of communications (that produce songs, novels, news, movies, etc. and distribute them to a large number of people
mass communication
process of designing and delivering cultural messages to diverse audiences though media channels as old as the book and as new as the internet
digital communication
images, texts, and sounds, that use pulses of electric currents or flashes are converted to electronic signals represented as varied combinations of binary numbers, these are reassembled as precise reproduction of a tv picture, magazine article, or telephone voice
digital turn
shift in media use and consumption resulting from the emergence of the internet as a mass medium, which enables an array of media to converge and be easily shared
media convergence
1.) technological merging of content across different media channels
2.) business model that consolidates various media holding under one corporate umbrella
culture
symbols of expression that individuals, groups, and societies use to make sense of daily life and to articulate their values
high culture
“good taste”-often wealthy, it is associated with the fine arts (ballet, symphony, painting, etc.), which is available in museums and theater
low (popular) culture
“poor taste”- those who enjoyed commercial ‘junk’ like soap operas, rock music, talk radio, comic books
modern era
Industrial Rev. - 20th Cent.
characterized by working efficiently, celebrating the individual, believing in a rational order, and rejecting tradition and embracing progress
progressive era
period of political and social reform lasting roughly from the 1890’s to the 1920s that inspired many Americans - and mass media- to break with tradition and embrace change
postmodern period
era in 1960’s- social values include celebrating populism, questioning authority, and embracing technology
populism
a political idea that attempts to appeal to ordinary people by setting up a conflict between “the people” and “the elite”
critical process
- Description: getting the gist of the subject
- Analysis: finding patterns and making connections
- Interpretation: interpreting the patterns made earlier
- Evaluation: evaluate how it made you feel personally
- Engagement: making your voice heard, act upon the material
