Media/reagents Flashcards
AIA medium
Actinomycete isolation agar, for isolating actinomycetes from soil due to starch, casein that others cannot hydrolyze as easily, has sodium propionate to discourage mold growth
APT
All-purpose with tween media, for optimal enrichment and isolation and growth of lactic acid bacterial has oleic acid and other growth factors needed by fastidious lactic acid bacteria
MacConkey agar
to detect and isolate gram-negative organisms, especially enterics and Pseudomonas, use bile salts and crystal violet to inhibit gram-positive bacteria growth
Nutrient broth/agar
all purpose medium for organisms who are not nutritionally fastidious, does not have fermentable carbohydrates
Succinate medium
used to cultivate anoxygenic anaerobic phototrophs
Mossel EE broth
used to enrich Enterobacteriaceae and has dextrose (supports the growth of all enterics), has brilliant green and oxgall to inhibit gram-positive organisms, must not be shaken
