media-quiz 2 Flashcards
moral panic
A feeling of fear spread among a large number of people that some evil threatens the well-being of society. this can be through the press, the public, law enforcement, politicians and legislators, action groups, folk devils, and the disaster analogy. with the press, it’s an active manipulation of the events that have taken place. politicians and legislators react to the scare with a call for regulations. folk devils are the personification of evil. individuals that represent the entire problem.
motif
recurrent thematic elements and figures of speech that encapsulate or highlight some aspect of the social problem.
state managers vs intellectuals
in crime news coverage, a distinction is often made between explaining the causes of crime and the appropriate controls that should be put into effect. state managers: police and politicians. intellectuals: professors and researchers. this distinction is important because in many instances people look to intellectuals for the cause and state managers for the control method. this is a problem because causes should be directly linked to the solutions and interests lead to different conclusions on appropriate crime control.
