What does Rapid proliferation mean?
Incredibly quick increase in that technology.
What are Conglomerates?
A large company composed of a number of companies (subsidiaries) engaged in generally unrelated businesses.
What is Curran and Seaton’s theory?
Media industries are all about profit and power and the way media companies are owned and structured in the way industries are run.
- There are only a few powerful companies.
- These companies dominate the industry.
- These companies only care about PROFIT/POWER.
- Products are made for as little money as possible - or with a view to generate as much money as possible.
- This makes us feel as though there is lots of choice when actually there are just multiple products offering the same thing.
- There is no real originality.
- There are less opportunities for independent producers because of the powerful companies flooding the market.
What is a Masthead?
Title of the Newspaper in bold font across the top.
What is a Strapline?
Strip of text at the bottom of the magazine.
What is Anchorage text?
Whatever text holds meaning to the front cover (explains why the main image is there).
What is a Buzzword?
Any word on a magazine that you won’t get it anywhere else e.g. exclusive.
What is a Skyline?
Additional information at the top of the magazine to catch the eye of the reader.
What are sell lines?
The writing that appears around the main image and which tells readers what is inside the magazine.
What is Puff?
An eye-catching graphic or text to draw attention (sticker).
What is an Extreme close up and what effect does it have?
One particular facial feature being shown ~ shows the audience how the character is feeling (emotion).
What is a Medium close up?
Shoulders showing.
What is a Denotation?
What we see (what is literally is).
What is a Connotation?
What is being suggested/possible meanings behind the image.
What is Mise en scene?
Everything that’s been placed on the scene (props, scene, body positioning, weather, costume, make-up and setting).
