What are denotations?
They are the literal things you can see.
What are connotations?
They are hidden messages, what can be interpreted, from a text, image, etc.
What are Codes & Conventions?
They are the typical features expected of a particular media in a genre.
What are the four main contexts you need to consider with context?
Social & Cultural
Historical
Economical
Political
What is ‘Media Language’?
It is how media communicates meanings.
In media, what does ‘Representation’ mean?
It is how media portrays places, social groups, events, etc.
What are ‘Media Industries’?
It is the process of production, distribution and circulation can affect media forms.
What is an audience?
It is that target (media) audience, reach and addresses audiences.
What are Diegetic Sounds?
They are sounds from within the world of the media (which the people within that media can hear).
What is a Non-Diegetic Sound?
They are sounds from the outside world of the media. Basically, whatever the characters cannot hear but the audience can.
Give examples of Diegetic Sounds.
Dialogue
SFX (Rain, etc.)
Give examples of Parallel Sounds.
Voice overs
Music to enhance the mood of the scene.
What is ‘Parallel Sound’?
It is sound / music that compliments the current screening media, enhancing the emotion or mood of the scene.
What is ‘Contrapuntal Sound’?
It is sound / music that clashes with the current atmosphere of the media. The mood is opposite to what we are listening to.
What is genre?
It is a type or category of a media text.
