Media As A Cause Of Crime Flashcards
Media + relative deprivation
Relative deprivation refers to people feeling a sense of envy of those who have more than they do, media promotes via advertisements that people should have material wealth in their lives in order to be satisfied + growth in social media contributes to this
They may drive them to innovate, using criminal means in order to achieve the material wealth they feel entitled to
Media can teach people criminal skills or drive them to acts of violence
Media can encourage people to develop specialised skills which enable them to commit crime, criminals often replicate things they have seen in media
The media can make people feel a sense of pleasure when viewing inapporiate content + they may want to experience this
Over exposure to illicent content can lead to people becoming desensitised to it, more likely to recreate it as they do not recognise that the behaviour is harmful
Negative labelling by the media could bring about deviance amplification
The media can effectively name and shame, they may not be able to reintergate into society so they may have to develop a deviant a career - deviance amplication
The problem of crime gets worse because they cannot reform their behaviour there crimes are not forgiven or forgotten - continue to commit crime
Media promotes + encourages crime
The media unintentionally persuades people to go out and take a chance of crime
Growth of social media: Enabled people to express their opinions more about the failures of the CJS - reduces the detterent effect + may inspire people to take a chance on crime
Media glamorises crime: creates an impression to young boys + men that it is a route to respect and success. Black media promotes the idea that crime rewards black males with money, status and sexual status
Media has been accused of turning crime into a commodity: Ads using images of crime to sell products to audiences - graffatti - cause people to think nothing about it
