The notion that the media prioritize issues, shaping what the public perceives as important.
Beauty Myth (Wolf)
The social standards that are placed on women and their physical appearance.
Bread and circuses (Curran and Seaton)
This refers to how the media provides the working-class content to make their lives more enjoyable in order to stop them complaining about important problems.
Candyfloss culture (Harvey)
The Marxist belief that the working-class are targeted with simplified media content, as opposed to the high culture content for the upper-middle classes, to distract them from their own exploitation.
Churnalism
When journalists produce news based on pre-packaged press-releases, without doing independent research or even checking their facts.
Citizen journalism
The practice where ordinary, everyday individuals report news and share information.
Cocacolonization (Fenton)
The globalisation of Western culture and how it is pushed through popular American products such as Coca-cola.
Concentration of ownership
The trend towards fewer individuals and/ or companies owning a higher proportion of the media and instead having it owned by media moguls.
Cult of femininity (Ferguson)
The notion that young girls are socialised to adopt traditionally feminine roles, e.g. homemakers and housewives.
Cultural hybridisation (Tomilson)
The process in which different cultural elements blend together to create new cultural forms and practises.
Cultural imperialism
The practice of promoting one culture over others, leading to the dominance of that culture at the expense of local cultures.
Ethnocentric
The notion that the Criminal Justice System focuses solely on positively presenting the dominant ethnic group in society, demonising the ethnic minority.
Folk devils (Cohen)
The process in which the media labels individuals who are seen as deviants/outsiders and then blame for real and/or perceived crimes, often using them as scapegoats.
Global conglomeration
Where companies in one country buy up companies in other countries, e.g. News Corp owns media outlets in several different countries
