Media Gives a Distorted View of Crime

A
  • Over-representation of violent and sequel crimes -> frequently covered in crime news reports, people believe they are common (only make up a small proportion of all recorded crimes in reality)

  • Media create a moral panic about an issue -> media represent drill artists in a negative light and blame them for the rise in knife crime, creating a moral panic

  • The media are a profit making business, and they choose stories that will get them the most profit and views (sell more newspapers, increase TV audience ratings)
