How did media effect 1997 election ?

A

The sun switched support from Labour to conservatives. Most offres switched to support Blair and new Labour. This persuaded many conservatives to vote Labour.
However opinion polls suggested Labour was headed for landslide anyway.

  1. Nick Clegg won(lib dem leader). Raised his profile and costing conservatives and David Cameron the votes for outright majority.
    However Lib Dem’s only increased share by 1% nationally.

A

Ed miliband (Labour) fell off the stage and gave over-excited “Hell yes, I’m tough enough” response to question making him seem less prime ministerial than David Cameron.
However opinion polls said it made no real difference.

Outcome
Widely reported that Labour would form coalition with SNP so conservatives campaigned on this basis.
Conservatives won 12 seat majority
Opinion polls overestimated Labour support and underestimated conservatives support
