Schools had to share classrooms because of loss of buildings.
Immediate responses
New Zealand Red Cross sent out volunteer emergency response teams and psychological support.
Red Cross helped to supply clean water and distribute water containers, soap and hygiene information.
Following the earthquake more than 45,000 people registered with the Red Cross.
Secondary responses
Government provided at least 90% of all the funds needed to rebuild area’s water, sewage and transport networks.
Power restored to 90% of city and 80% of water restored.
Paid $898 in building claims.
Avoided temporary housing and ensured that all damaged housing was kept water tight.
