Gestation
Time a baby is in utero (in the womb being developed)
Menstruation
a period typically once every 28 days where the uterus sloughs off a layer of blood and tissue that was preparing for a fertilized egg
Menopause
the stopping of menstruation (typically around age 50-60)
Menarche
First menstruation, typically around age 11-12
Placenta
nutrient rich organ that provides the fetus with oxygen and gets rid of waste
Estrogen
sex hormone that regulates the female reproductive system
Progesterone
Sex hormone that regulates menstruation, pregnancy, and birth
Obstetrics
Area of medicine that focuses on birth and fetal/maternal health
Vagina
The canal is used for sexual reproduction and leads to the cervix (entrance to the uterus/womb)
Bartholin Glands
glands located on either side of the labia and secrete lubricating substances during sexual intercourse
Clitoris
Bundle of nerve endings located above the vagina just under where the two labia meet (sensory organ that is highly sensitive)
Perineum
groin area
labia majora
larger folds on the outer sides of the vulva
labia minora
smaller folds just inside and above the labia majora
Hymen
thin piece of taught skin/tissue that covers the vagina, effectively keeping it mostly closed off until broken
Vulva
the entire external female sex organs
