Med Tech Flashcards
(33 cards)
How does this technology work for a MRI?
Technique using magnets, radio waves, and a computer that produces images of soft tissues in the body, like muscles and organs.
What is a MRI used for?
- Investigate and diagnose disorders (stroke, tumor, eye, brain, spinal cord injuries, or unusual pain)
- Evaluate injuries of joints
How can you read the results of a MRI?
Sagittal
- Side profile of the body, like you have been split in half from your head to your pelvis
Coronal
- Front to back, x-y plane
Vertical photo from the front
- head on
Cross-Sectional
- Thin slices of the body from the top down
How does a CT technology work?
A CT Scan is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce images of the inside of the body.
What is a CT scan used for?
- diagnose brain injuries
- diagnose issues in your other organs such as the pancreas, liver, intestines and kidneys
How can you read the results of a CT scan?
- You have to look at the colors white, gray and black
- Each color represents a distinct part of your body: soft tissues, fat and bone
- A change in color in a specific area of your body might indicate the presence of an abnormality.
How do PET scans work?
The PET scan uses a radioactive drug called a tracer to show both typical and atypical metabolic activity
What are PET scans used for?
- evaluate organs or tissues for the presence of disease or other conditions
How can you read the results of PET scans?
- Doctors look at PET scan pictures to find areas where the body’s metabolism might be abnormal, shown by high SUV numbers
- They compare these findings with other tests and your medical history to figure out what’s going on and decide what to do next.
How do X-rays work?
Uses electromagnetic waves in order to create images of the internal systems of the patient’s body.
What are X-rays used for?
- used in order to figure out the issue inside the patient’s body, without having to physically/ surgically open the patient
- most commonly used in order to see the injuries to a bone
How do you read a X-ray film?
Black on the film = air or less dense tissue
White on the film = bone and metal (bones appear brighter)
Gray on the film = fat, water, soft tissues
Dark grey sports that are brighter than rest of area = Masses like cancer or pneumonia
How do ultrasounds work?
- Ultrasounds use echolocation: high frequency sound waves and the echoes
- he machine uses a probe to transmit high frequency sound waves into your body, the sound waves travel through your body and hit a boundary between the tissue, which are then displayed on a screen
What are ultrasounds used for?
- An ultrasound produces an image of a person’s internal body structure
- study the growth and development of a baby in the womb
- screening for disease or conditions that may affect the internal parts of the body
How can you read the results of a ultrasound?
comparing it to a healthy/normal person’s image. Things they may look for include:
the shape , size, and placement of the organs
the shape and size of blood vessel
swelling or fluid build up
How does Angiogram work?
Angiography is a type of X-ray used to check blood vessels. Blood vessels do not show clearly on a normal X-ray, so a special dye called a contrast agent needs to be injected into your blood first.
What are Angiogram used for?
Angiography is used to check the health of your blood vessels and how blood flows through them.
How can you read the results of a Angiogram?
Your provider may tell you that you don’t have anything blocking your blood vessels and your heart’s getting enough blood.
Abnormal results
- Something may be blocking your coronary artery or arteries
- Your provider can tell you which arteries have a block in them and where, as well as how bad they are.
How do ECG work?
- you need to lie still for a few minutes
- During this time electrodes attached to various parts of the chest, arms, and legs which will record electrical activity that is created by your heart beats.
What are ECG used for?
An ECG test can help diagnose certain heart conditions such as abnormal heart rhythms and coronary heart disease by measuring the heart’s rhythm.
How can you read the results of a ECG?
Measure the distance between the R Waves (big spikes) to see if the rhythm is regular or irregular.
How does fluoroscopy work?
A live video of continuous x-rays that pass through the body part then displayed on a monitor
What are fluoroscopy used for?
Diagnosing a health concern like heart or intestinal disease
Looking inside organs, joints, muscles, and bones
Guiding treatments like injections, implants, or orthopedic surgeries
How can you read the results of fluoroscopy?
On a Tv-like monitor that displays a live video x-ray
