Med Tech Flashcards
How does this technology work for a MRI?
Technique using magnets, radio waves, and a computer that produces images of soft tissues in the body, like muscles and organs.
What is a MRI used for?
- Investigate and diagnose disorders (stroke, tumor, eye, brain, spinal cord injuries, or unusual pain)
- Evaluate injuries of joints
How can you read the results of a MRI?
Sagittal
- Side profile of the body, like you have been split in half from your head to your pelvis
Coronal
- Front to back, x-y plane
Vertical photo from the front
- head on
Cross-Sectional
- Thin slices of the body from the top down
How does a CT technology work?
A CT Scan is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce images of the inside of the body.
What is a CT scan used for?
- diagnose brain injuries
- diagnose issues in your other organs such as the pancreas, liver, intestines and kidneys
How can you read the results of a CT scan?
- You have to look at the colors white, gray and black
- Each color represents a distinct part of your body: soft tissues, fat and bone
- A change in color in a specific area of your body might indicate the presence of an abnormality.
How do PET scans work?
The PET scan uses a radioactive drug called a tracer to show both typical and atypical metabolic activity
What are PET scans used for?
- evaluate organs or tissues for the presence of disease or other conditions
How can you read the results of PET scans?
- Doctors look at PET scan pictures to find areas where the body’s metabolism might be abnormal, shown by high SUV numbers
- They compare these findings with other tests and your medical history to figure out what’s going on and decide what to do next.
How do X-rays work?
Uses electromagnetic waves in order to create images of the internal systems of the patient’s body.
What are X-rays used for?
- used in order to figure out the issue inside the patient’s body, without having to physically/ surgically open the patient
- most commonly used in order to see the injuries to a bone
How do you read a X-ray film?
Black on the film = air or less dense tissue
White on the film = bone and metal (bones appear brighter)
Gray on the film = fat, water, soft tissues
Dark grey sports that are brighter than rest of area = Masses like cancer or pneumonia
How do ultrasounds work?
- Ultrasounds use echolocation: high frequency sound waves and the echoes
- he machine uses a probe to transmit high frequency sound waves into your body, the sound waves travel through your body and hit a boundary between the tissue, which are then displayed on a screen
What are ultrasounds used for?
- An ultrasound produces an image of a person’s internal body structure
- study the growth and development of a baby in the womb
- screening for disease or conditions that may affect the internal parts of the body
How can you read the results of a ultrasound?
comparing it to a healthy/normal person’s image. Things they may look for include:
the shape , size, and placement of the organs
the shape and size of blood vessel
swelling or fluid build up
