Generic name
A
Also called “official name”. Usually printed second on label. Smaller print. Same drug only has ONE official name.

Dosage strength
A
Prepared dosage of medication. Average dosage strength given to the average patient at one time. ALWAYS has a unit of measure with it.
- *Do not confuse with TOTAL number of tabs/caps/etc.**
- learn to question orders for more than 3x the amount*

Trade name
A
Identified by the registration symbol. Usually capitalized and printed first on label. Same drug may have many trade names-exclusive to the company that manufactures it.

Oral medications
A
- use calibrated oral syringes (brown) or med cup provided with medication
- pour at eye level if using cup and measure using meniscus if using syringe
