Adult Dose: 0.2 to 1 mg
IVP Rate of Administration: 0.2 to 1 mg every 2-3 hrs given slowly over 2-3 minutes
Purpose: to relieve severe pain
S/E: SOB, constipation, urine retention, anxiety, orthostatic hypotension
Considerations:
- use cautiously on patients whose ability to maintain normal BP because of side effect of hypotension
- Monitor patient especially within first 72 hours for resp. depression

IVP Rate of Administration: 0.05 to 0.1 mg slowly over 1-2 mins
Purpose: induce & maintain anesthesia, for severe pain
contraindication: asthma, myasthenia gravis
S/E: agitation, bradycardia, asystole, hypoventilation, resp. depression
Considerations
- interaction w/ grapefruit juice (increases blood fentanyl levels)
- 100 mcg fentanyl = potency of 10 mg of morphine
- Monitor patient’s resp. status especially during the first 24-72 hours
- Monitor closely after therapy ends for 24 hrs due to the residual drug being detected up to 6 hours after IV dose

S/E: arrhythmias, bradycardia, edema, anaphylaxis

- for stroke must be given within 3 hours after onset
- monitor HR, BP, & rhythm frequently before & after therapy

Purpose: to prevent nausea and vomiting
contraindication: congenital long QT syndrome
S/E: arrhythmias, prolonged QT interval, tachycardia, SOB, edema, elevated liver enzymes
Considerations:
- if hypo/hyperkalemia, treat before administering ondasteron
- Monitor patients ECG/EKG
- Teach the patient to report signs of hypersensitivity immediately
- if transient blindness resolves few minutes to 48 hrs

- rapid IV admin. can result in a drop in BP

- ensure continuity of gastric acid suppression from the transition from oral to IV because can lead to serious complications
- Flush line w D5W before & after giving drug
- monitor urine output
